Angus and Hugh MacNaughton are brothers. They dislike each other ... A lot.
It all started when Hugh bit Angus at a family picnic in the summer of 1989. In a last-ditch attempt to forge a brotherly bond between the two, Mr and Mrs MacNaughton secure them jobs at an exclusive five-star game lodge. They manage to convince (bribe in the case of Angus) the siblings to work at Sasekile Private Game Lodge for a year.
A Year in the Wild A Riotous Novel tells the uproarious, cringe-worthy and hilarious tales of Angus and Hugh in the form of their weekly emails to their sister Julia back home. Their experiences include encounters with guests, animals, female staff and often a mix of these.

This read was made all the more enjoyable after becoming acquainted with the author on his broadcast live safari drives on National Geographic Wild and WildEarth. Someone else has already compared him to Hugh Laury's character "House" and this could be the perfect analogy for the humor and sarcasm displayed in Mr, Hendry's writing. It is quite evident that he pulled heavily from his experiences as a safari guide when writing this tome. Several times I have heard James tell us a story whist broadcasting and those stories have been written in the missives from Angus to his brother and sister. Mr. Hendry is hugely talented in music, acting, writing and broadcasting.Product details

Thoroughly enjoyable read. Wit, sardonic humor and a brush of other emotions that surprise and delight throughout. I’m sure I’ve met these characters before - I’m sure we all have in our lives. Easily relatable even if you’ve never spent a year in the wild. One can’t help but wonder if this is insight into the behind the scenes of running a 5 star luxury safari lodge...and if it is, where can you sign me up?
This has got to be one of the best books I have ever read. Just thinking of what occurs in this story makes me want to read it all over again. It is hilarious. Buy this and you are going to shed many tears of laughter. This gives the reader a very good idea of what happens in the upmarket game lodges in South Africa and how much fun these guys have. Without revealing too much of what happens, go buy this book. I guarantee you will love it. It is worth every cent and more. I am currently reading the follow up to this (Back to the Bush) and am thoroughly enjoying it.
Hilariously funny in some parts, sarcastic as heck in others, the dialogue is authentic and the descriptions of the behind-the -scenes activities such as how one becomes a field guide are interesting. I recommend this book to anyone addicted to Safari Live, who is interested in African safaris and who digs dry humored narrators. cheers!
Hilarious story about two young brothers becoming civilized by the wild. Not recommended for bedtime because you'll want to find out what Angus and Hugh have done next. His style is reminiscent of Somerset Maugham's entertainments. I hope James continues this saga. Highly recommended.
This book is written by one of our guides at Wild Earth. James is funny and anyone who loves animal and the chance to see Africa should tune into wildsafarlive.com by National Geographic. We do 2 drives daily for 3 hours each time. Right now the sunrise Safari is at 11pm CST and the sunset drive is from 830am to 1130am CST. His book is fun and a easy read! Love the setting of Africa as the back drop to this book!
I watch Mr Hendry every day on you tube and the website Nat Geo Safari Live and he is as entertaining in real life and he is in this book. Having watched him live, I can see his characters come to life in his book. It is a great read and based on true experiences and with a mixture of characters that will have you shaking your head in disbelief. Highly recommended. Can't wait to start the sequel to see what trouble Angus can stir up next. Only wish there was an audio version with Mr Hendry as the narrator (it may be in the works).
One brother a bit of a snob, the other hilarious. For most of the book I laughed out loud, in one part I had tears streaming down my face. I liked the 'letter writing' format that the author used. Then there was the nature parts which brought it all together. He was really able to make me feel the vibe of seeing the wildlife, sunrises, sunsets, etc.
I think anyone who loves nature will enjoy this book but also anyone who enjoys snarky humor. I hope he continues to write.
